I. Analysis of ESD Static Electricity Issues in LED Advertising Displays
1. An LED display is a type of flat-panel display composed of numerous small LED module panels. It delivers rich colors, high color saturation, high resolution, and high‑refresh‑rate dynamic images. Its versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, including government plazas, recreational squares, bustling commercial centers, digital advertising billboards, shopping streets, railway stations, and sports venues (such as the UNILUMIN–Universiade venue). However, because these displays are often exposed to harsh environmental conditions, they must meet stringent requirements for electromagnetic compatibility and other performance criteria.
II. Application Cases of TVS Diodes in ESD Protection for LED Advertising Displays :
1. Analysis of the causes of ESD electrostatic testing:
In accordance with the IEC 61000‑4‑2 air‑gap ±8 kV standard, an air‑gap ±8 kV discharge was applied to the display’s LED lamps. Under the condition of all white LEDs fully illuminated, two sets were observed.
The LED color distortion was later attributed to ESD-induced damage to the corresponding driver IC, which occurred during air‑±8k discharge testing of the machine’s LED lights.
2. ESD electrostatic discharge mitigation measures for TVS diodes:
After identifying the root cause, the drive IC that had previously been damaged by ESD was replaced, and upon power‑up, the display functioned normally. Subsequently, an ESD‑protective TVS diode (model: ESD0524CR) was added between the corresponding drive‑IC pin and ground. Further air‑gap tests at ±8 kV and ±10 kV were conducted, and no further instances of IC damage were observed.
